It’s finally ready! As promised, the alpha version of my Goal Mapping software is ready.
For those of you who aren’t down with geek lingo, an “alpha version” is a complete piece of software, but it has only been tested by the developer (me), so it has loads of bugs, it’s probably ugly, and may not do everything that later version will do.
For those of you who didn’t have a chance to read my previous post about Goal Mapping, here’s a brief rundown:
Goal Mapping enables you to create a plan with concrete steps to go from where ever you are now to where ever you want to be. You create the map, then the software calculates the best path to reach your goal and tells you what your chances of success are.
I’m pumped to hear suggestions from people using this, but I’m really practicing what I preach with this release, because frankly I’m embarrassed of this software. I know it’s ugly, and I know it has bugs. What kind of a perfectionist am I!?
Instructions for using the software are built right into it, so without further adieu, I give you:

Awesome, looks intimidating but I plan on using it anyway. Thanks for explaining what alpha means, I knew it was some kind of testing phase, is all.
On a funny note, I didn’t know anyone still used IE until I joined my new company, it’s what we have to use!
This is a gem, and certainly that you are giving it for free is very generous of you. Thanks dude!
Thanks for the vote of confidence–I HOPE it becomes a gem!
And yes, IE was the bane of existence when I was a full time web developer. I’d have to write the software, then spend just as much time trying to get it to work in IE. Terrible.
This stuff really interests me, as I have a background in Project Management and an obsession with leadership.
I like the sliders for Probability and Control – and your explanations of them. There was a system I worked with a few years ago that would have broken Control down a bit further – into your Ability (current skills), and your perception of the Challenge (difficulty) of the task.
I have a someday-to-be piece of software floating around in my head for managing tasks, that uses sliders in a similar way. Unfortunately I can analyze, project manage, even document… but I can’t code.
Keep up the good work, it will be fun to watch your progress.

Looks very interesting. I just messed around with it for a bit and brainstormed a quick little plan. That helped me to organize my thoughts more.
Have you ever used mind mapping software?

This is pretty awesome. I think a visual tutorial would make it less intimating for newcomers. Maybe in the future?
Also what are the terms for privacy? Maybe an explanation of what’s happening to the information people are submitting. Just helps with peace of mind.

Yeah, there are lots of things I plan to do, and a robust tutorial system is one of them for sure!
As for privacy, you’re right that I should have it clearly labeled, but just for your peace of mind:
This tool doesn’t even communicate with my server. It’s 100% javascript, and doesn’t use ajax, which means the program runs on your computer, and the information you put into it never leaves your computer at all. It’s completely safe and private.
Damn. I had a rather humorous goal I set up with a lot of different probabilities and everything I was hoping you’d see. Oh well, lol.
